Henri de Tonti (1650-1704) was a French explorer who has been credited with founding what is now known as Illinois in the United States.
In 1681 to 1683 he built Fort St. Louis on the Illinois River with LaSalle and brought settlers from Canada. By 1700 the colony was trading actively with the English in Carolina.
