William Adams (c. 1564-1620) was an English navigator. He was born in Gillingham, Kent and became the first Englishman to visit [[Japan]}[1] [2]. He found favour with the Shogun Ieyasu and helped establish an English/Dutch trading settlement there. He was given the name Miura Anjin ("the pilot of Miura" in Japanese) and was buried in Hikado after his death in 1620 at the age of 55.
[3]. The character John Blackthorne in James Clavell's novel Shogun, is loosely based upon his life.
