Papyrus

Papyrus was one of the earliest types of paper invented. (The word paper derives from the word papyrus.) It was very important to the ancient Egyptians and helped transform the Egyptian society in many ways.[Citation Needed] The earliest pieces of papyrus were made from mummy wrappings, but later papyri were made out of reeds from the Nile river, enabling the Egyptians to produce them in much larger quantities. Once the technology of papyrus making was formed, the method of production was kept a secret, allowing Egypt to have a monopoly on it. The first use of papyrus is believed to be around 4000 B.C.

The earliest known manuscript of the New Testament was written on papyrus.[1]
