Dan was the fifth son of Jacob and first of Bilhah, the maidservant of Rachel. His story is recorded in the Bible in the book of Genesis. He was named by Rachel and called Dan, meaning "judge" because, as she said "God has judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son." (Genesis 30:6). Dan was blessed at the end of Jacob's life and alloted a share in the Twelve Tribes of Israel. (Genesis 49:16-18)
