Cholera is diarrheal disease caused by intestinal infection with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The infection is often without symptoms, but often it can be quite severe. Approximately one in 20 infected patients exhibit profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps. In these persons, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur quickly. [1]
Although cholera is mostly unheard of in the developed world, it is still prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa and other undeveloped areas where pagan and heathen infestations abound. [2]
