Charles Mathias

Charles Mathias (b. 1922) is a Republican politician and former United States Senator from the state of Maryland. He is 1944 graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania. He earned a law degree from the University of Maryland in 1949. Mathias served in the Navy during World War II. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1960, and to the US Senate in 1968. He retired from the Senate at the end of his third term, in 1987. Mathias and his wife Ann are Episcopalians. In the 2008 US Presidential Election, Mathias endorsed Democrat Barack Obama.[1]
