A sandwich is a food item, consisting of some sort of filling (such as meat or cheese, often accompanied by lettuce, tomato, and onion) enclosed within two pieces of bread. Condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard are commonly used. It is named after the Earl of Sandwich who invented it.
