Mary Rowlandson was born in 1636 in England. She lived in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Her book, The Narrative of the Captivity, Suffering, and Removes of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, relates the story of several weeks she spent as an Indian captive. Despite the horrible treatment she often suffers, Rowlandson continues to look to God for help throughout the work. Rowlandson is eventually ransomed into freedom.
