1.What do you think was the main secret to Alexander the Great's enormous success?

Alexander learned from one of the greatest teachers of that time, Aristotle. He was taught to learn from his experience and to correct his mistakes. He set a goal for himself at a young age and he knew anything was possible if you put your mind to it. He had immense courage in himself and he knew he had the skill. When you make a goal for yourself you will risk anything to accomplish it. Aristotle helped Alexander the Great understand lofty concepts and how to use his skills for his benefit. He also guided Alexander in doing the right thing. What Alexander did not know Aristotle made sure he learned.

2. What about the Greek geography was unique and conducive to the development of democracy? Explain a bit.

The low mountain ranges of Greece stood in the way of making one large community because it separated the land into individual areas. The Greeks soon built many other smaller city states (Polis). Since there was no passable river connecting them together, there was not much communication between the Greek communities. Because the city states were isolated from each other, many individual governments were organized, which set the ground work for the configuration of democracy. The small size and poor soil quality of the land prevented the communities from having a large population, which started the immigration of people to Greece. Colonization helped the feeling of individualism and humanism to grow rapidly, which led to the growth of democracy in Greece.

3.Explain the big advance in language mentioned in the lecture, which might have been even more significant than the invention of the wheel.

The advance in language enabled the people to express and explain themselves. The trade and the society in Greece flourished since the people could now agree and consult over different contracts or conversations. The growth in language helped set the ground work for the growth of Christianity.

4.Pick a significant advance in knowledge by the Greeks and comment on it.

The Advance of math was a great step for mankind. Math helps us to understand how things work and it is now part of our daily lives. We use math for almost everything. The Ancient Greek society profited from the progress of math since many of the people’s jobs revolved around or was connected in some way with math. To this day, we still use many of the theories and techniques that the Greek scholars invented. We owe much of our discoveries and progress to the genius of the Greeks.

5.Aesop's Fables: pick one you like best and explain why, or comment on all of them as a group.

The Fable, “The Bundle of Sticks”, specifically intrigued me. It proves that union gives strength, because alone we can be destroyed, but together we can survive all hardships. Aesop grasps the meaning of family and friends and how they are always there to support us when we experience many sufferings. Man always needs someone to console them; someone they can trust that will always be there with them. If a family separates, members will eventually break down from grief and destruction; we are meant to assist each other and always be there to help.

6.Socrates, Plato and Aristotle: who impresses you most, and why?

I am especially overcome by the genius of Plato. He created the idea of a republic system as in his book, “The Republic”. His theory is now the foundation for the American system of government. He thought of something entirely different from what the world was used to. I admire him that he was not afraid to announce a new form of government even though there were people who criticized him and thought his idea would never work. If there were no people that thought of the impossible, man would never have achieved as much as we have over the years.

H3. Greek mathematics, philosophy, drama, literature and architecture. Which do you like best, and why?

I love the Greek drama over all. Theater always shows what is on the societies’ mind. People can express how they feel in the theater and make their ideas known to all. Drama is an opportunity for all to let their inner self explode and come alive. In the Theater it is never wrong to show different ideas. You are always free. With drama you get to go beyond just knowing the characters’ personalities, but understand how they feel about things. Theater was one of the many diversions with which the Greeks occupied their time.
