Olivia F. February 18, 2009 Homework Three

1. I enjoy learning about classical India more mainly because it is mind- boggling that Hinduism was and is still thriving there to this day. However, I also enjoy learning about China’s unique and colorful culture.

2. Hinduism can only be followed by the Brahmins, the highest caste, while Buddhism appeals to all different levels of society; therefore, many people accepted it outside of India.

3. That is the “Yin and Yang”, the symbol for Taoism, a religion which emphasizes harmony with nature. Each curved side represents the continual contact of two opposite forces.

4. Hinduism has thrived for so long because it is able to conform to any other religion; by believing in so many deities, Hindus are able to accept other religions’ deities, while still staying true to their own religion.

5. One of my favorite insights by Sun Tzu is “To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.” In essence, this quote means that you have the power to do the best that you can to secure your victory, but only the enemy has the power of allowing you to defeat them.

6. Chinese Dynasties (Empires): Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.), Han dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220), after its decline, China was ruled by provincial governments called the Three Kingdoms (A.D. 220- 280), and then the Sui dynasty (A.D. 589).

7. I believe that while the Silk Road was an enormous influence on the world, the internet had a much bigger affect since it was much faster than trading on the road.

H2. Going back to what we discussed in class, I think that for something to be categorized as a religion some sort of god or idol has to be involved. Confucianism can be categorized as a lifestyle but not as a religion.

H4. By far, the greatest contribution to the world would be the discovery of “zero” by India.

H5. By discovering “zero”, mathematicians have opened a new door into math. Before zero was in use- like you said- how would someone complete the equation 2-2=?
