A rattlesnake is a type of snake native to North America, particularly the Southwest United States and the northern part of Mexico. The rattlesnake comes in 16 distinct varieties, all positively identified by the jointed rattles on the tail.[1]

The rattlesnake is native to North America but not Europe, so in the 18th century it was often used in flags and cartoons to denote America.
