Nucleosynthesis is the process of creating atomic nuclei fro pre-existing protons and neutrons. According to standard cosmological theories, a few minutes after the Big Bang most of the hydrogen in the universe was formed, as well as small quantities of helium and beryllium. Heavier elements are formed mainly inside stars, through the process of nuclear fusion.
