A gigue was a Baroque dance in a compound meter (such as 6/8 or 3/8). The name "gigue" is French, derived from the English/Irish "gig." Also under this category is the giga, the Italian version, usually faster than the French style. Composers such as J.S. Bach wrote movements in both types.
