Indentured servant

An indentured servant was a worker who signed a contract whereby the worker would serve someone for a fixed period of time, usually seven years, and the master or employer would pay for his expenses of travel, food and shelter.
This was a popular way to bring farm workers to the Ameican colonies in the 1600s, until Bacon's Rebellion caused terrified employers to prefer the greater control offered by slavery.
