Brandon McInerney was convicted of murder of a fellow pupil, Larry King, at a school in California. He shot King in the head twice from short range. It was widely assumed that this was a hate crime because King, who was bisexual, had been teasing McInerney with homosexual references the previous day [1] at a public school in California. However, McInerney has never spoken about his crime and is motivation is not known.
In McInerney's jury trial, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the charges, including murder, manslaughter, firearms offences and hate crime[2]. He later pled guilty to second-degree murder and received a prison sentence of 21 years without remission.
