Abraham Jacob Multer (December 24, 1900 – November 4, 1986) was a Democrat congressman from New York who represented the 14th and 13th congressional districts for a total of two decades, spanning 1947 to 1967. He was later a justice for the state Supreme Court, serving for nine years.
Multer was also a president of Bnai Zion, a Zionist fraternal organization at the national level.[1][2]
U.S. House of Representatives
Following the resignation of Rep. Leo F. Rayfiel to become a district court judge, Multer ran for the open seat in the 1947 special election and easily won, garnering 58% of the vote over two opponents.[3] He continued being re-elected twice before running again following redistricting in the 13th congressional district,[4] where he succeeded Donald O'Toole.
During his tenure, Multer successfully led the opposition towards towards legislation which would authorize a subway system in Washington, D.C., instead advocated for private enterprise to be responsible for the construction of the $400 million project.[1]
According to JFK documents released in 2017, Multer played a role in an 1960 plot to bring disposed Cuba dictator Fulgencio Batista to the United States, where he would then be the beneficiary of a $150,000 bribe split between him, a Miami Beach attorney, and two Batista adherents.[5] Batista ultimately turned down the offer.[6]
When the "Committee to Save the Middle East from Communism" was formed, Multer urged members to prohibit the use of their names.[7] This was in response to a letterhead signed "Gabriel Wechsler on behalf of Congressman Multer," to which the New York representative sent a letter to colleagues reading:[7]
| “ | The sending of this letter was unauthorized, and immediately upon learning thereof I contacted the author of the letter who agreed with me that it was unauthorized. I have taken the precaution of writing to him, telling him that I will not participate in any of the work of this committee and do not wish to have my name connected with it in any way whatsoever. May I respectfully suggest that you follow the same course. | ” |
Multer faced a strong primary challenge in the 1966 midterms by businessman Melvin Dubin.[8] He narrowly won renomination, defeating Dubin by only 2.5 percentage points.[9]
