Northumberland County Council is a unitary authority council which covers around 96% of the geographical area of the county Northumberland, but only around 40% of its population. The largest settlement in the council area is Blyth, with a population of around 40,000, although the admin HQ is at Morpeth.

County for the purposes of lieutenancy

Northumberland County Council's area is co-terminus with a county for the purposes of lieutenancy, also named after (but distinct from) the traditional county Northumberland.
