The term American means someone from the Americas, which comprised of two continental pieces: North and South America.

The countries in North America are Canada, United States of America, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

The countries in South America are Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile.

In common parlance around the world, American usually means "Citizen of the United States".
