The Battle of Amphipolis in 422 B.C. was part of the Second Peloponnesian War between the Greek city states of Athens and Sparta. Athens had suffered a reversal of fortunes caused by the brilliant Spartan general Brasidas. Cleon, general for Athens, advanced toward the city of Amphipolis where Brasidas had withdrawn his forces after the arrival of both Cleon and Nicias. Cleon didn't have adequate security and Brasidas made a surprise attack routing the numerically superior Athenians. Both Cleon and Brasidas were killed during the fighting.
