The Cod Wars were confrontations between Iceland and the United Kingdom over North Atlantic fishing policy which took place in 1958. 1972-73 and 1975-76. They followed unilateral extensions of Icelandic fishing grounds by the Icelandic government which were not recognised by British trawlers. Icelandic gunboats would attempt to cut the lines of, or even arrest, British vessels; while British Royal Navy frigates were sent to the area to protect the fishing fleet from interference.[1]
