Dutch (Nederlands) is the main language of the Netherlands and Suriname, and one of the official languages of Belgium, alongside French.

Dutch is a Germanic language. Of all the members of the Germanic family, it is perhaps the closest to English in sentence structure and syntax yet sound is lacking.

The Afrikaans language in South Africa is descended from the Dutch of 17th-century Dutchmen who settled there.
