The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta. The Oilers were founded in the World Hockey League in 1972, but joined the NHL in 1979. The Oilers play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference at Rexall Place. The Oilers had one of the most impressive dynasties in professional sports having drafted some of the biggest stars in Hockey. Wayne Gretzky who is was also named the "Great One" of Hockey set 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, 6 All Star Records, 9 Most Valuable Player Awards, and 10 scoring titles during his career, many of these while Captain of the Oilers. It addition Edmonton was assisted by Marc Messier, Kevin Lowe, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson and others. The Oilers would win the Stanley Cup in 1983-84, 1984–85, 1986–87, 1987–88, 1989-90. In addition to playing for the Stanley Cup in 1982-83. The Oilers fortunes changed with the changing face of hockey with smaller market teams not being able to pay large salaries for the players, but the Oilers have had a resurgence of late, playing for the Stanley Cup again in 2005-06.
Playing in Alberta, the Oilers have a strong rivalry with the Calgary Flames. They are also the farthest north team (in terms of longitude) playing in any of the four major professional North American sports leagues.
