McMullin was born in Provo, Utah, and grew up outside Seattle, Washington.[4] He is a 1994 graduate of Auburn Senior High School in Auburn, Washington,[5] went on an LDS mission to Brazil[4] and then attended Brigham Young University where he received a bachelor's degree in International Law and Diplomacy in 2001.[6] In 2001, McMillin received a Master's of Business Administration degree from the University of Pennsylvania.[7]
