The female sex refers to that division of a species which produces eggs. In most mammals, the fertilized eggs, or zygotes, develop inside the body for the full term and the fetus is expelled to the outside in birth, to be nurtured by milk produced by mammary glands. A female human child is called a girl. With the commencement of menstruation a girl becomes a biological woman.
