Isoroku Yamamoto

Admiral of the Fleet Isoroku Yamamoto (1884-1943) was Commander in Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the early years of the Second World War, and author of the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor in 1941, although he personally considered the decision to attack the United States to be a grave error.

Isoroku Yamamoto was a young naval officer during the Russ-Japanese War, and lost a leg at the Battle of Tsushima.

He was killed on 18 April 1943 while on an inspection tour of Japanese positions in the Solomon Islands, when his aircraft, a G4M bomber, was ambushed and shot down by American P-38 Lightning fighters.
