Despite this tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church, the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas would remain a strong influence on him. He lived in poverty until the publishing of his controversial novel Ulysses in 1922. Joyce revolutionized the treatment of plot and characterization in fiction and is best known for his use of the stream of consciousness style. He married Nora Barnacle in 1931; a son was born in 1905, and a daughter in 1918. He died in Zurich in 1941.
