Joseph Manchin is the liberal United States Senator from West Virginia. He was elected in November 2010, filling the seat formerly held by the late Robert Byrd. Because Manchin was filling a vacant seat in a special election, he was sworn in almost immediately and then participated in the lame duck session of Congress prior to 2011. Manchin was previously the Governor of West Virginia.

He abandoned his pro-gun views in 2013 when he co-wrote the Manchin-Toomey gun-grab bill, showing his true colors as an anti-gun liberal.

It was reported in April 2017 that less than 2% of Manchin's campaign donations actually came from his state of West Virginia.[1]

Partisan Democrat

Manchin portrayed himself as a "conservative" in order to be elected, campaigning against the positions of the Democratic Party leadership on cap and trade, gun control, and the Bush tax cuts. As a Senator, however, he has shown himself to be left-wing. Manchin displays liberal values not only in his beliefs, but also in his behavior, using vulgar language in public.[2][3][4]

In 2016, Manchin expressed (in words) his willingness to work with Republican President Donald Trump, and voted for most of his cabinet nominations, and for Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. This earned him ire from left-wingers, who showed how left-wing they themselves are by demanding his removal from his leadership position and labeling him a "Democrat in name only," despite his numerous liberal positions.[5] However, whenever a close vote for a conservative bill or a Trump Administration nominee was held, Manchin took the liberal Democrat position. He voted against many Trump non-cabinet nominees.

President Trump, however, rejected the notion that Manchin is a bipartisan politician, saying that "he talks. But he doesn’t do anything."[6] Also according to Trump, Manchin's attitude is "'hey, let’s get together, let’s do bipartisan.' I [Trump] say, 'Good, let’s go.' Then you don’t hear from him [Manchin] again."[6][7] In April 2018, Trump repeated those sentiments, stating that "he talks, he grabs me, I grab him, he says hello, I say hello — but he votes against everything."[8][9]

Support for gun control

Manchin has a record of supporting gun control measures, despite being from a conservative state known for its opposition to gun regulations. In 2013, Manchin sponsored a bill that would have instituted universal background checks, and in April 2017 he stated his hope that President Donald Trump would sign gun control measures.[10] Despite these positions, his attending pro-gun control fundraisers, and the National Rifle Association's rejection of him, Manchin continued presenting himself as a "pro-gun" candidate to West Virginia voters.[11]

In 2018, Manchin again proposed gun control measures after a Florida shooting, even though his proposed measures would not have stopped the shooting had they been law.[12][13]

In 2018, Manchin had a "D" rating from the NRA,[14] an organization whose legislative rankings are more lenient than other pro-Second Amendment organizations such as Gun Owners of America.

Liberal, anti-gun donors

Despite claiming to be pro-gun, Manchin went to anti-gun Michael Bloomberg's mansion in 2013 for a fundraiser.[15]

It was reported in 2017 that Manchin received donations from the law firm Paul, Weiss, which had a record of supporting gun control and defending terrorists in court.[16]

Support for abortion

In April 2017, Manchin endorsed Planned Parenthood, which funds abortions, the legalized murder of the unborn.[17][18][19][20][21] Less than a month earlier, he voted against eliminating a pro-abortion Obama-era regulation prohibiting states from blocking Planned Parenthood funds.[22] In June 2018, Manchin warned President Trump against nominating a Supreme Court justice opposed to the Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion federally.[23] In August 2018, Manchin voted against an amendment sponsored by Rand Paul to defund Planned Parenthood, despite claiming he would do the opposite in 2015.[24]

In October 2018, Manchin announced that he would oppose a West Virginia referendum to end a pro-life referendum to end taxpayer-funding of abortion in the state.[25] Despite claiming to be pro-life, he gave a vague answer on his views on abortion in an October 2018 debate.[26]
