Mortal Kombat is a series of highly violent fighting video games. It features very graphic violence. A source of controversy are the extremely gory finishing moves known as Fatalities. The controversy was addressed directly in the sequel, which introduce "Friendships." Instead of executing the opponent, the character would juggle, give them ice cream or other similar actions. Blood and gore in the series is done in a deliberately over the top, sometimes humorous manner.

The original Mortal Kombat for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System removed most of the blood and gore in the game.

The gameplay consists of a fighting match between two characters, who can punch, kick, jump, duck, block and perform special moves depending on the character being used.
