Norman Wisdom (b. London, 1915) is a much-loved British comic actor. In his many films he plays the role of a hapless 'everyman' or 'little man' character, (known as "the gump" ) at the mercy of outside forces - mainly his bosses. Although he now lives in retirement on the Isle of Man, he is a huge star in Albania. His popularity there dates from the Communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, when Wisdom's films, despite having little to do with Marxist ideology, were among the very few western imports shown in Albanian cinemas and on television. Hoxha seems to have had a taste for western comedy: his favourite reading was, improbably, the novels and stories of P.G. Wodehouse.[1][2][3][4]
