The Parathyroid hormone is designed to increase the concentration of calcium ions in three different ways:

  1. Induces increased reabsorption of calcium (Ca2+) ions from the distal convoluted tubule in the cortex of the kidney and results in augmented excretion of phosphate ions
  2. Enhances increase of calcium from bones
  3. Augments absorption of calcium in the ileum, found in the small intestine. This involves increased production of vitamin D.

Produced and secreted by the parathyroid glands, and is a polypeptide consisting of 84 amino acids.
