The Parathyroid hormone is designed to increase the concentration of calcium ions in three different ways:
- Induces increased reabsorption of calcium (Ca2+) ions from the distal convoluted tubule in the cortex of the kidney and results in augmented excretion of phosphate ions
- Enhances increase of calcium from bones
- Augments absorption of calcium in the ileum, found in the small intestine. This involves increased production of vitamin D.
Produced and secreted by the parathyroid glands, and is a polypeptide consisting of 84 amino acids.
