A Parthian shot is a criticism leveled by someone as he leaves a group. It is named after the Parthians, the ancient people of Parthia who used the innovative cavalry tactic of feigning retreat and then, as their enemies pursued them, twisting around and shooting arrows at their adversaries.

The Parthian shot saw dramatic usage in the defeat of Crassus, where, according to Plutarch, Parthian soldiers facing west in the early morning used the sun reflecting off their armor to blind their enemies. They then circled them to barrage them with arrow fire, and rode away, executing the Parthian shot maneuver to decimate those still standing.

It is sometimes referred to as a "parting shot."
