Rowan Williams
Rowan Douglas Williams was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 2003 until Dec 31, 2012. He is succeeded by Justin Welby, Bishop of Durham. Rowan Williams (now Baron Williams of Oystermouth and master of Magdalene College at Cambridge University) was born in Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom into a Welsh speaking family on June 14, 1950. He studied Theology at Christ's College, Cambridge University.
Williams was elected Archbishop of Wales in December of 1999 and enthroned at St. Woolos Cathedral in Febuary of 2000. On July 23, 2002, Dr. Williams was elected the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury. He was enthroned in the Canterbury Cathedral in February 2003.
He is well known for his liberal views. As well as actively opposing the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he has publicly expressed sympathy with the global Occupy movement.
