He was an accomplished general famous for roundly defeating the Mexican Army led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana at the Battle of San Jacinto. Sam Houston was a very colorful member in Texas history. He held the offices of senator, governor, and president He was strongly opposed to the Southern secession, and removed from the office of governor for his opposition.
