Steven Bradbury is a former Australian athlete and the first person from the southern hemisphere ever to win a gold medal at a winter olympics (speed-skating). He was also a member of the 1994 team which picked up Australia's first ever winter olympic medal, a speed-skating bronze.

2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics

Bradbury's win in the 1000m short track event came under the most unlikely (and bizzare) circumstances.

  • Bradbury performed well to win his first heat, but the quarter final draw saw him pitted against the firm favourite and the defending world champion, with only the top two to advance.
  • Bradbury finished third in his quarter final race, but disqualification of the defending champion saw him promoted to second place and a spot in the semi final.
  • In the semi final Bradbury was running last, however three competitors fell allowing him to finish second and advance to the final.
  • He was running last in the final race until the last turn when all four of his competitors collided and fell, handing a shocked Bradbury the win and Australia's first winter olympic gold medal.

Following the race Bradbury was reluctant to accept the gold medal, until finally deciding that it was his reward for many years of hard work and dedication.
