Than Shwe was the Burmese Military Dictator up until 2011. Shwe, a member of the Burmese Way to Socialism Party, along with Saw Maung, helped oust socialist leader, Ne Win. After Saw Maung died, Than Shwe became leader but stepped down in 2011 due to Western-backed protests which led the way to Aung San Suu Kyi eventually becoming the leader.
