The Great Dictator is a 1940 film, starring and written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, that satirizes Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. It was Charlie Chaplin's first "talkie", and has him playing a dual role as Adenoid Hynkel, the dictator of the fictional country of Tomania, and as a Jewish barber, who is never named. It is notable for being an early anti-Nazi picture, and at the end of the film, Chaplin (as the barber) makes an impassioned speech against dictatorship and a plea for democracy everywhere.
The Great Dictator was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (for Chaplin).
