Walter Jerry Payton (July 25. 1954—November 1, 1999) was a Hall of Fame running for the Chicago Bears. Nicknamed "Sweetness", he is considered by many to be the greatest running back in NFL history. Payton was known not just for his ability to run the ball but also to receive and pass. He still holds or held at one point the record for most rushing yards (16,726), yards from scrimmage (21,624), all-purpose yards, (21,803), rushing touchdowns (110), passing yards of a non-quarterback (331) and most passing touchdowns of a non-quarterback (8).
