The emblem of the WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) is an agency of the United Nations and the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for "providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends."[1] When diplomats met to form the United Nations in 1945, one of the issues they wished to address was the establishment of a global health organization, and WHO came into force on 7 April 1948. The date is now celebrated annually as World Health Day.

The current Director-General of WHO, appointed in November 2006, is Dr. Margaret Chan.

Criticism

"Accountable to no one, the WHO is a bureaucratic behemoth."
"Just because a study or pronouncement carries the imprimatur of the WHO should not mean it is sacrosanct." [2]

"the World Health Organization is increasingly working against American values and the interests of the poor" [3]

"So what's wrong with the WHO and Commonwealth Fund studies? Let me count the ways." [4]
