The 2023 Poland election will be held on October 15, 2023, and the NATO war in Ukraine is the leading issue. As polls show a shift against endless support for perpetual war, suddenly the ruling PiS party has changed its position to stem losses to a more conservative party in this election.

The incumbent president since August 6, 2015 has been Andrzej Duda.

The change in position includes:

  • siding with farmers of Poland against grain imports from Ukraine[1]
  • Poland ending its arms transfers Ukraine to the country, after being "one of the loudest cheerleaders for the Ukrainian cause since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022"[2]
  • promising to end unlimited support of refugees from Ukraine[3]
  • new statements cautioning against continuation of the war
  • the rise of Ukrainian crime in Poland[4]

President Duda said at the opening of the 2023 United Nations General Assembly session, "Ukraine is like a drowning man, it can drag us into the depths".[5]

The issue of migrants pouring into Poland, primarily from Ukraine, is the biggest issue in this election. The ostensibly anti-immigration ruling party has suddenly been engulfed in cash-for-visas scandal: "The stridently anti-immigration Polish government has come under fire for allegations of granting hundreds of thousands of working visas in exchange for bribes."[6] Document smuggling, weapons and human trafficking in Poland among Ukrainians has increased.
