2026 Yehuda Junction Palestinian terrorist shooting

2026 Yehuda Junction Palestinian terrorist shooting

On 23 October 2026, two Arab "Palestinian" terrorists identified as Hamas operatives carried out a deadly shooting attack at the Yehuda Junction near Hebron, killing two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and wounding three others. The attackers intended to carry out a larger-scale assault against civilians, but were stopped by Israeli forces before they could execute the murderous plan.

Background

The attack occurred amid a series of deadly Arab terroristic incidents targeting Israelis in Judea Samaria. Recent cases included the murdering of a French-Israeli man near Neve Tzuf and a vehicle-ramming attack near Beit Horon that critically injured the son of Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter.[1][2][3]

Two days before the Yehuda Junction attack, Hamas warned Israel through a United Nations envoy that it was prepared to launch another attack on the scale of 7 October 2023, threatening targets in Israel, Judea and Samaria, and abroad. The warning came amid mounting military pressure on the organization and a deepening financial crisis.[4]

Attack

On the morning of Friday, 23 October 2026, two Arab "Palestinian" gunmen arrived at the Yehuda Junction, near Hebron, in a vehicle bearing Israeli license plates. Armed with an M16 rifle and a handgun, the attackers reportedly surveyed the area before launching their assault.[5]

At approximately 07:20, the gunmen opened fire on an IDF Home Front Command reserve unit deployed in the sector and on civilians in the vicinity.[6][7]

Five people were wounded in the attack. Two soldiers sustained critical injuries and were subsequently pronounced dead. The victims were identified as Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roitman and Sergeant Yuval Shay Suilem. Three other people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to light.[8]

Israeli reporting identified the gunmen as Hamuda and Firas al-Ja'ba, described as Hamas operatives from the Ein Dir-Bahah neighborhood in western Hebron. They were reportedly nephews of senior Hamas official Majed al-Ja'ba, who was released from Israeli prison to Turkey as part of the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange. Three other relatives had reportedly been arrested in connection with terrorist attacks, including the 2023 shooting at the Tunnels Checkpoint.

The attackers' use of a vehicle bearing Israeli license plates and their reported possession of a substantial quantity of ammunition raised concerns that they intended to penetrate the area and inflict casualties on a larger scale. Israeli security officials subsequently assessed that the attack had been intended to target civilians on a much greater scale than the casualties ultimately inflicted.[9]

Pursuit of the attackers

Israeli security personnel at the scene immediately returned fire, while additional forces were dispatched to the area. The IDF launched a pursuit, blocked major routes and imposed restrictions on movement in several Palestinian villages in the Hebron region as security forces searched for the gunmen.[6]

Following a brief chase, the attackers were located, and an exchange of fire lasting approximately 20 minutes ensued. Both gunmen were killed by Israeli forces, including the deputy commander of the Home Front Command's Ari Battalion and the sector company commander.[10]

IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said that a large quantity of ammunition had been discovered in the attackers' vehicle, indicating that the gunmen may have intended to carry out a much larger assault. Israeli officials credited the rapid response of the soldiers at the scene with preventing further casualties and averting a potentially larger massacre.[11]

Measures

Immediate security response

Following the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered security forces to impose a cordon around Hebron and pursue those responsible for the shooting, including individuals suspected of having organized or supported the operation. Netanyahu described the incident as a Hamas terrorist attack and praised the soldiers who stopped the gunmen, while vowing to pursue the organization and those who had sent the attackers.[12][13]

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that the soldiers who neutralized the gunmen had prevented a large-scale attack and a far greater tragedy. Israeli officials emphasized that the rapid intervention of security personnel had been critical in preventing the attackers from carrying out their suspected wider plan.[14]

Demolitions and expanded counterterrorism operations

On the afternoon of 23 October, Israeli authorities began demolition-related operations on the outskirts of Hebron. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich reportedly ordered demolitions near the attack site and approved the establishment of four farms in the southern Hebron Hills, describing the measures as the beginning of a broader response.[15]

The IDF and Shin Bet subsequently launched a targeted counterterrorism operation in Hebron to locate weapons, apprehend suspects and dismantle terrorist infrastructure. The campaign expanded into a multi-day operation, with parallel activities reported in Jenin, Nablus and east Jerusalem as Israeli forces sought to disrupt additional cells and prevent further attacks.[16][17]

On 24 October, Israeli security forces arrested 40 suspects during raids conducted as part of the post-attack crackdown, according to Israel National News. The arrests formed part of a broader effort to identify and disrupt the networks suspected of facilitating terrorist activity in the West Bank.[18]

Restrictions and additional security measures

Israeli authorities also considered or implemented broader restrictions in the Hebron area. According to Channel 14, Defense Minister Israel Katz barred approximately 2,000 Palestinians from returning to a Hebron neighborhood pending the dismantling of Hamas infrastructure there. The measure was described as part of a more aggressive security approach following the killing of the two soldiers.[19]

The response reflected an effort to prevent follow-on attacks through arrests, weapons seizures, intelligence operations and pressure on suspected terrorist networks. The scope and duration of individual restrictions and demolition measures remained subject to Israeli security and government decisions based on saefty consideration.
