A19 road

The A19 is a major road in northern England, traversing the counties of Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland. It runs parallel to the A1 road. Running from Doncaster in the West Riding to Seaton Burn around 5 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne, the A19 is 124 miles in length and serves the primary destinations of (south-to-north) Selby, York, Thirsk, Middlesborough, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Sunderland and South Shields.

Most traffic joins the road at Thirsk, via the A168, from the A1(M) northbound, bound for the Teesside built-up area. The section south of Thirsk is almost entirely a single carriageway. Conversely, that to the north is entirely dual-carriageway and, passing through the Teesside and Tyneside conurbations, is home to two major feats of engineering: the Tees flyover (opened 1975) and the two Tyne Tunnels (opened 1967 and 2011).

Route

The road's southernmost end is in central Doncaster, in the far south of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The southernmost section in Doncaster is dual-carriageway, but the rest of the route as far as Thirsk is a single carriageway road. It closely follows the course of the East Coast Mainline to Selby and York, meeting the M62 motorway just south of the former at junction 36.
