A Boy Named Sue is a country song by Johnny Cash. It would be Cash's only top-ten single to reach the pop charts, peaking at #2.

The singer tells of being abandoned by his father at age 3; other than his guitar and an empty alcohol bottle his father leaves him nothing outside of naming him "Sue", commonly a female name: he grows up ridiculed and as a result becomes tough and mean, constantly relocating due to humiliation.

He vows to find and kill his father: ultimately in mid-July he finds him at a saloon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and engages in a vicious brawl, ultimately his father admits that was the "son of a [female dog]"[1] that gave him the name, because he knew he wouldn't be around to see him grow up. The two make peace, but the singer vows if he has a son, he will name him "Bill or George, any [expletive] thing[2] but Sue! I still hate that name!"
