All Elite Wrestling
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is a professional wrestling promotion based in Jacksonville, Florida. It is owned by Tony Khan, whose family own the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL franchise along with English soccer club Fulham.
In May 2017, wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer commented that, outside of World Wrestling Entertainment, no wrestling promotion (notably, Ring of Honor Wrestling (ROH), one of the more successful "independent" promotions at the time) was able to sell 10,000 tickets to any event. Taking the criticism as a challenge, ROH wrestlers Cody Rhodes (son of legendary wrestler Dusty Rhodes) along with brothers Matt and Nick Jackson (wrestling as the tag team The Young Bucks) promoted an event, All In, in September 2018 which had an attendance of 11,263. This drew the interest of Khan, who eventually started AEW on January 1, 2019. Khan would eventually purchase ROH in March 2022, which continues as a sister promotion of AEW.
AEW currently features two weekly shows on TBS/TNT: Dynamite on Wednesday (its flagship show) and Collision on Saturday.
AEW differs greatly from WWE in several respects:
- AEW contracted talent is allowed to wrestle for other independent promotions, and those with which it has partnerships (but not WWE), whereas WWE talent can only wrestle for it.
- AEW features varying styles of professional wrestling: in addition to the American style, matches feature Mexican lucha libre style (known for its aerial feats), British "catch as catch can" technical style, and Japanese hard striking "strong style" matches, whereas WWE generally features only typical American style matches with some lucha libre.
- AEW has partnerships with other promotions worldwide, notably CMLL in Mexico, RevPro in the UK, and New Japan Pro Wrestling in Japan; talent from those companies are prominently featured on AEW and ROH programs and vice versa (WWE's only partnership is with Mexican promotion AAA, which is owned by its parent company UFC).
