The Bible is the best-selling book of all time.[1]

Between 5 to 7 billion Bibles have been published.

Bible memorization has famous supporters throughout Christian history. Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Hank Hanegraaff advocated memorizing the Bible (Aquinas and Hanegraaf memorized an extensive portion of the Bible).

During his 40 day temptation by the devil in the desert, Jesus Christ quoted Scripture in response to the devil's temptations using phrases like "It is written" to counter each temptation.

How to memorize the Bible

Adam Houge, author of the 2015 book How to Memorize the Bible Fast and Easy, recommendations:

  • Have faith and confidence in your ability to memorize and God's assistance in this matter rather than have doubt.
  • Don't memorize the individual book, chapter and verse number information associated with each verse as a general practice. But if one wants to memorize the Bible book/chapter and verse for key passages regarding doctrine, etc., then this has its place too. However, as explained below, there are mnemonic/memory techniques to make it far easier to remember the Bible book, chapter and verse number information for Bible verses.

Your Memory : How It Works and How to Improve It by Kenneth L. Higbee, Da Capo Lifelong Books; 2nd edition (March 2, 2001)

Various books on memory improvement show how to effectively remember large amounts of numerical/detailed information. Besides this information, the psychologist Dr. Kenneth Higbee offers information on how to memorize Bible book/chapter/verse numbers using a commonly used memory system called the phonetic system (Your Memory : How It Works and How to Improve It by Kenneth L. Higbee, Da Capo Lifelong Books; 2nd edition (March 2, 2001), page 186-187).

Other Bible memorization tips:

Some famous verses have numeric features, as in John 8:32, which is chapter 23, verse 25: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Isaiah 7:14 contains the most famous prophecy in all of history: "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."

Memorizing the length of chapters in key Bible books is a start - notice that most of the key books have an even number of chapters, while several notable exceptions have an odd, prime number of chapters:

Book Chapter Length
Genesis 50
Psalms 150
Proverbs 31
Isaiah 66
Daniel 12
Matthew 28
Mark 16
Luke 24
John 21[3]
Romans 16
Ephesians 6
Hebrews 13

In total, there are 1,189 chapters in the Bible.[4] By memorizing chapter lengths for key books, and then verse numbers within each chapter, someone can begin to memorize the entire Bible itself. Start with your favorite verses and then expand.

Occasionally someone else quotes a Bible verse in a conversation, and then you'll be able to tell him or her exactly where that verse is from!

Linking Psalms to hymns can help.
