Dallas Baptist University
Dallas Baptist University (DBU) is a private university located in the far southwestern part of Dallas, Texas. DBU also operates branch campuses in Plano and Hurst. It is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the convention which was once solely affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention but now is aligned with both it and the Baptist World Alliance from which the SBC withdrew (however, DBU is quite conservative in terms of doctrine, generally adhering to that held by the SBC).
History
DBU was originally called Decatur Baptist College, and was located in Decatur, Texas (a city northwest of Fort Worth) until 1965 when (at the invitation of the Dallas Baptist Association, the local SBC association for the Dallas area) it relocated to Dallas at its current location (on a hilltop overlooking Mountain Creek Lake). It gained university status in 1985.
Academics
DBU is organized into seven colleges and two schools:
- Mary C. Crowley College of Christian Faith
- Dorothy M. Bush College of Education
- College of Business
- College of Fine Arts
- College of Humanities and Social Sciences
- College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
- College of Professional Studies
- Graduate School of Ministry
- Gary Cook School of Leadership
Athletics
DBU participates in athletics at the Division II level, except for baseball in which they participate at the Division I level. The baseball program has produced several Major League players, among them Ben Zobrist. A tradition during every evening baseball game is when the nearby Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery plays "Taps", play is stopped and the crowd remains silent until playing is finished.[1] Athletic teams were formerly known as the Indians with a blue and gold color scheme, but changed in the late 1980's to the Patriots and adopted the American national colors of red, white, and blue.
