Edward Savage

Edward Savage (1761 - 1817) was an American portrait painter and engraver, he studied under Benjamin West. Some of his works include: Samuel Adams, The Washington Family, Joseph Griffiths, Anthony Wayne, Liberty in the Form of the Goddess of Youth, and The Savage Family. In 1790, John Adams commissioned him to do the portraits of George and Martha Washington.

The George Washington family became well known during Washington's administrations in New York and Philadelphia, and were immortalized in Edward Savage's The Washington Family.

It was the president of the University of Harvard Mr. Joseph Willard, who requested Washington to sit for his portrait in 1789.

On October 13, 1794, Savage was married to Sarah Seaver.
