Free Justina is about an American teenager, Justina Pelletier, held hostage by Boston Children’s Hospital for over a year.[1] She has been taken away from her family due to a dispute over medical procedures.

Justina was diagnosed with genetic disorder mitochondrial disease several years ago and subsequently had surgery that improved her life. Since that time, her doctors were hired by Boston Children's Hospital. The family sought the best treatment for their daughter and followed the doctors to their new location. That is when the trouble began.

Boston Children's decided she was originally misdiagnosed and has somatoform disorder instead, which is a mental disorder.[2] Justina painfully deteriorated under the treatment of somatoform, physical therapy with a vitamin cocktail. The parents were punished for questioning Boston Children's decision. Under court order of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Family,[3] the parents are allowed just a one-hour visit and a single 20-minute phone call per week. Justina is no longer able to walk and had been transferred to Boston's Bader 5 psychiatric unit and just recently, a physical therapy facility.

The Pelletier family has gone broke fighting for her release. The hospital hides behind medical confidentiality laws, refusing to discuss the situation. Malpractice by the hospital knows no boundary and they are an extremely wealthy institution of the Harvard system. Her captivity has resulted in being denied her religious rights of receiving communion as a Catholic and she has been denied an education, now having lost two years worth of schooling. The family is seeking help from the general public, financial, legal, and federal assistance..

Legal developments

Justina won a legal battle to be removed from Boston Children's and to be treated by Tufts Medical Center. Judge Joseph Johnston reversed the decision by giving permanent custody of Justina to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. This essentially makes Justina a political prisoner as a ward of the state.[4]

Anonymous Involvement

The shadow group Anonymous has taken up the cause to Free Justina with their #OpJustina campaign. They have initially targeted judge Joseph Johnston with home phone and mailing address. Alice Newton is also targeted as the doctor who had Justina incarcerated.[5]
