Gerard van Honthorst

Gerard van Honthorst (Gherardo delle Notti) (Utrecht 1590 - Utrecht 1656) Dutch Baroque painter. He went to Italy in the 1610s to study the painting of Caravaggio, Guido Reni and Bassano.
Van Honthorst became court painter to the princess of Orange, at The Hague (1637). His works are numerous (portraits, pictures, taverns, etc.). Because of his scenes by night or illuminated by a single candle, he was best known as Gherardo delle Notti.
