Hebraisti

Hebraisti - the ancient Greek word Ἑβραϊστί - was used in the Gospel of John to mean Aramaic but was traditionally translated as "Hebrew". There is a continuing debate over how to translate it at John 20:16

Modern scholars increasingly view Hebraisti as meaning Aramaic, not Hebrew. Scholar Josef Dalman pointed out that Aramaic had become the language of the Jews in the 1st century A.D., and thus it made sense to refer to it as Hebraisti. Scholar Joseph Fitzmyer points out that Hebraisti was often used in connection with Aramaic words.
