Ionian Gulf

The Ionian Gulf or Ionian Bay (Greek: τῷ ’Ιονίῳ κόλπῳ) is a term used in Arrian's first book and can contextually only possibly refer to the coast line from the mouth of the river Ister (’Ιστροσ / Danube) and engulfing the sea and coastlines southeast on the Black Sea as facing the lands of the Ionians, namely Athens (being ethnically unique in Greece at the time), the Aegean islands and the eastern coasts of modern day Turkey.
